Tentative Draft Program Itinerary
September 4-13, 2007

Tuesday, September 4:

morning

Depart Boston for Shanghai


Wednesday, September 5 - Saturday, September 8: SHANGHAI


Wednesday, September 5:

late afternoon

Arrive in Shanghai. From the airport, the delegation will go to the Four Seasons Hotel.

evening

Opening reception. An informal reception for the delegation at the Four Seasons Hotel (Jazz 37 on top floor) will offer an introduction to the China trip, and feature a cultural orientation by Tufts Professor Xueping Zhong.


Thursday, September 6:

8:30 - 3:00

Delegation to Fudan University. President Lawrence Bacow will meet with FU President Wang Shenghong; delegation will meet Wu Xinbo, Associate Dean for International Cooperation, tour the campus and re-sign the agreement between the Dental School and Huashan Hospital.

Lunch and seminar at Fudan University Dean Eileen Kennedy and Fudan Vice President Wei-ping Wang will speak, along with Dr. Ray Yip, Adjunct Professor at the Nutrition School and incoming Director of the Gates Foundation in China.

Rest or Tour the Bund and Concession areas.

5:00 - 6:00pm

Meet and greet at the hotel with Provost, Vice Provost and local high school students and counselors.

7:00 - 9:30pm

Reception at Shanghai Museum.
President Bacow will speak about Tufts. Guests to include alumni, friends/families, and members of the Young Presidents Organization. Speaker is Jiemian Yang, F84, Vice President of Shanghai Institute of International Studies, with response by Xia Liping, Director or SIIS Department of International Strategic Studies.


Friday, September 7:   ** Break into smaller delegations **

The Provost and Professor Xueping Zhong will lead a delegation to Hangzhou (~3 hrs. r/t) to visit Zhejiang University, home to Tufts’ study abroad program and celebrating its 110th anniversary.

morning

Members of delegation not going out to Hangzhou have the opportunity to visit high schools or other sites.
 (Xiwai International School, founded by Xu Ziwang, F88, and Fudan affiliated High School.)

lunch

Lunch on individual basis and optional tours (on own via hotel).

2:00-4:00

Tufts IBO delegation to China Europe International Business School. President Bacow and Chuck Bralver, Executive Director of Fletcher’s MIB and also board member, meet with CEIBS President, Dr. Bert Bennett and others. Fletcher grows contacts with school. Two Fletcher students will be studying there. Possible panel discussion - topic TBD.

Note: Fletcher will re-sign an agreement.

7:00

Delegation reception/dinner at Xian Qiang Fang, featuring Chinese music, makeup and tea appreciation. This event will be hosted and sponsored by Chavalit (Fred) & Darani Lin (Winnie) Tsao, A07P.


Saturday, September 8:

Depart Shanghai for Beijing. (Approx. 2-hr. flight)

afternoon

Arrive in Beijing. Stay at Peninsula Palace Hotel.

Tour of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square (3 hours)

*arrangements through Chinese Culture Club

6:30-8:30pm

Reception at the Peninsula, Grand Ballroom II
Dignitaries, alumni, friends and members of the Young Presidents Organization will be invited. President Bacow will speak about Tufts.

 

Sunday, September 9:

9:00 - 12:00

Meeting of the International Board of Overseers
Arkema Beijing Chemical Co., Ltd.

Option of 1 of 4 tours (arrangements for some via Chinese Culture Club):

  1. Tour of the The Great Wall(This tour will have to leave at 12:00.)
  2. Pedicab tour of traditional Beijing neighborhoods (hutong).
  3. Art tour with Karen Smith (sponsored by Robert Wise)
  4. Tour of 2008 Olympics venues

5:00 – 6:00pm

Meet and greet at the hotel with Provost, Vice Provost and local high school students and counselors.

7:00 – 9:00pm

Delegation dinner. This dinner will most likely be held at Jin Feng Gu Yuan, a renovated portion of the White Dagoba Temple, built in the 1270s.
(This is a non-official dinner. We will provide arrangements, but delegation members will pay for their own dinners.)


Monday, September 10:

9:00 - 12:00

Dr. Rob Russell, Director of HNRCA, and Li Yanping, Deputy Researcher at Chinese CDC will speak to delegation.  (Venue TBD.)

12:00 - 2:00

Return to hotel; lunch on an individual basis.

12:00 - 1:30pm

“Fletcher IBC/Oliver Wyman Joint Luncheon--The CFO as Agent of Capital Markets Discipline” at hotel with Chuck Bralver
 ** BY INVITATION ONLY **

2:00 - 5:00

Visit to China Foreign Affairs University; includes meeting with the president and a talk by Dean Bosworth on “China’s Role in the World”

 (This could change to morning.)

7:00 - 10:30

Dinner and reception. This will be an opportunity to gather in a place of political/historical significance - the State Guesthouse. Guests will include Ministry officials and all Fletcher alumni.

Chinese ambassador to North Korea, Xiaoming Liu, F84, will receive the Dean’s medal and give a talk with Dean Bosworth - “Building Harmonious Relations with Northeast Asia.”
