The Middle Kingdom and Roof of the World Trip
Dear Tufts Alumni and Friends:
Please join us this August, 2007, as we travel to China in conjunction with the Tufts in the World program series. Our program, entitled The Middle Kingdom & The Roof of The World, is specially designed to encounter the incredible diversity of China’s regional cultures, from the metropolitan and modern to the rural and historic.
The camaraderie and intellectual spirit that are distinctive features of all our programs will be further enhanced as our journey coincides with the meetings of the Tufts International Board of Overseers in Beijing and Shanghai. At these venues, we have an invitation to attend selected University-hosted events and mingle with President Bacow, Provost Bharucha, deans, and administration in attendance.
Happily, our own Tufts faculty with Asia connections will also be present. Along with notable Chinese scholars and officials, they will serve on panel discussions and share their perspectives on contemporary China. Note: our events with the International Board are still being finalized, so some itinerary details are likely to change.
Beyond Beijing and Shanghai, we will travel to ancient towns, take a cruise, stroll in magnificent gardens and marvel at expansive architecture and antiquities. We will visit Lhasa in Tibet, Xian, Chongqing, China’s fabled Three Gorges on the Yangzi River, and Zhujiajao. An optional extension to Hong Kong is also available.
For first-time travelers to China this is a rich itinerary indeed! Combined with lectures, commentaries, and meetings with local people from unusual walks of life, we should return with interesting insights on a range of issues and enriched observations and impressions.
