About China

The People's Republic of China (PRC) was established on October 1, 1949, with Beijing as its capital city. The region has a very long and rich history, however, dating back more than 3000 years.

At 1.25 billion, the PRC holds one-fifth of the world's population within its borders. It is the largest population in the world and the third largest country in terms of territory, following Russia and Canada. Shanghai is the largest city in the country, and serves as an ideal example of China's rapid, profound economic and social growth and development.

Political power remains centralized in the Chinese Communist Party.
